Forthcoming events at the Climbing Works
Wed 25th Aug BMC Learning To Train Workshop
The Climbing Works will be hosting the BMC's new Learning to Train workshop. This workshop will be delivered by Katherine Schirrmacher.
The Learning to Train:Climbing Technique workshop builds upon FUNdamentals, looking at how specific techniques can be coached. These include: precise and accurate footwork; ways of using different handholds; principles when climbing specific features, such as cracks, corners and arêtes; and principles when climbing on different gradients, such as slabs, vertical walls and overhanging terrain.
What is Learning to Train?
The workshop is aimed at anyone who coaches or leads climbing sessions. Whether you're a parent or youth worker who simply wants to know more or a full time climbing coach, these workshops will broaden your knowledge.
The FUNdamentals workshop focuses on general themes which are relevant to many sports, such as agility, balance and coordination; awareness of the body’s centre of gravity; and the relationship between weight transfer and economy of movement. In this way, the FUNdamentals workshop makes explicit important themes underpinning climbing movement

Both FUNdamentals and Learning to Train are stages within the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model. Sport scientists have reported that there are critical times within a young person's life when the effects of training can be maximised. This has led to the development of the LTAD model, which identifies appropriate training aims at each stage of the athlete's physical development.
However, this does not mean that the BMC's workshops are appropriate only for those working with young people, as adults as much as children will be best placed learning how to climb economically before becoming overly concerned with further skills such as precise footwork, for example.
Previous attendance on a FUNdamentals of Climnbing Workshop is a requirement for the Learning to Train Workshop. The workshop will have a maximum of ten people attending and payments are made to the BMC. The Climbing Works will not be taking payments or bookings.
